Job Summary:

The Social Media, Marketing and Communications Specialist is part of the Medill Office of Marketing, Communications and Special Events and primarily supports content production and social media management. The specialist serves as the day-to-day social media content creator and is responsible for developing high-quality and engaging posts for our followers. The position also helps to support event and program management for Medill School.

Please note: Some occasional evening and weekend work may be required.        

Specific Responsibilities:

Content Production

  • Supports the development and implementation of marketing strategies for Medill’s academic programs and brand reputation. Helps execute strategies and tactics that ensure that all Medill school- and program-level marketing initiatives are best-in-class and meet the reputation and enrollment goals of each program.
  • Manages the creation of marketing content about Medill’s programs and research.
  • Assists with creating email campaigns.
  • Monitors and updates marketing content as needed across all channels to ensure timely, consistent messaging around Medill and Northwestern brands.
  • Measures and analyzes the effectiveness of marketing initiatives on a regular basis and adjusts strategy to achieve desired results. Assesses the performance of content to help determine what works well and what should be changed to achieve better results.
  • Manages and develops marketing assets including photographs and video clips.

Social Media

  • Maintains and manages Medill’s social media channels.
  • Formulates and implements social media strategies to promote Medill’s academic programs and thought leadership. Creates and posts relevant and timely content and actively engages key stakeholders via social media and responds to comments and messages.
  • Develops dynamic multimedia content for posting on social media.
  • Monitors web and social media for Medill content to enhance and develop the brand. Stays up to date on and implements best practices.
  • Stays attuned to audience preferences, trends and new social media technologies and networks.
  • Monitor effectiveness of social media posts and content to help determine how to achieve the desired engagement and results.

Marketing, Communications, Special Events Support

  • Assists the Medill Office of Marketing, Communications and Special Events with project and program management and logistics.
  • Assists with Medill communications including design/layout, proofreading, newsletters, photography, etc.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to support select events; attend events as needed.

Miscellaneous

  • Collaborates with colleagues across the school to help advance Medill’s strategic goals and improve the educational experience of our students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating social media content and managing social media accounts in a professional setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to create compelling and effective marketing communications content that engages target audiences.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Proficient in photography, videography, and basic editing skills.
  • Skilled at interviewing others.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and independently.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Highly dependable.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Photoshop, InDesign, social media platforms and Excel.
  • Interest in all of Medill’s degrees and programs and demonstrated knowledge of them.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of experience in a communications or marketing role.
  • Confident, professional, positive attitude with a sense of humor.
  • Ability to adapt to different people and situations, and incorporate honesty, respect, and fairness in daily actions.

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Proficient use in a CRM system.
  • Proficient in HTML and website content management systems.
  • Proficient in Google Analytics.
  • Proficient in AP Style.
