Dept Marketing Statement
Originally founded in 1997, the Baskin School of Engineering is the first professional school at UC Santa Cruz.  Over the past 20 years, Baskin Engineering has become a unique 21st century school of engineering and technology, characterized by evolutionary growth fueled by on-going research opportunities that open new areas of intellectual inquiry.  Baskin Engineering has grown to include six academic departments, a variety of research centers and institutes, and has ambitious plans for further programmatic growth. The focus of Baskin Engineering educational programming  is to instill strong basic knowledge for sound practice in science and ethical engineering for the well-being of society, and its diverse curricula facilitate creative thinking and prepare students for productive and rewarding careers.  Baskin Engineering is focused on building collaborative connections and expanding instruction and research activities for faculty and students at UC Santa Cruz, both at its Santa Cruz campus and at its campus in Silicon Valley, the international center of technological innovation.

The Computational Media Department is dedicated to the creation, enhancement, and study of media forms
where computational processes enable deeply interactive and generative experiences. The Department emphasizes the construction of technologies that make possible novel media experiences, such as computer games, while simultaneously embracing and engaging in theoretical and practical approaches from the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The Department offers top ranked game programs in the world: a BS in Computer Game Design, a Professional MS in Games and Playable Media, a Professional MS in Serious Games, and an MS and PhD in Computational Media, where students learn game design, programming, and production skills from award-winning faculty. 

This position is directly involved with the professional master's game programs offered at the UCSC Silicon Valley Center located in the heart of Silicon Valley, the worldwide epicenter for industry and innovation in games, and information technology. The UCSC Silicon Valley Center opened in 2016 and the building features contemporary interior design with multiple classrooms, computer labs, and project rooms, along with an event center, sound studio, and television studio.

Job Overview

The Marketing, Communications and Recruitment Coordinator for UC Santa Cruz's two Professional Game Programs, (1) Games and Playable Media and (2) Serious Games, is responsible for creating, developing and managing a strategic marketing plan and a new brand for the game programs, which includes developing promotional materials, short- and long-term strategic plan. The Coordinator will use analytics to boost our reach to target audiences, especially for the serious games program, both nationally and internationally. The Coordinator will develop comprehensive promotion and advertising materials and use methods for search engine optimization to reach our audiences. The Coordinator will develop a strategic plan for social media outreach to target markets locally, nationally, and internationally; develop marketing materials, including fliers, social media posts and advertisements, and webinar materials to educate the public on our programs; as well as be technically oriented to use analytics and search engine optimization techniques to boost the programs in appropriate venues. Further, the Coordinator will conduct outreach to appropriate industries to market our students and our programs to potential student employers. 

The position is based in the UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley Center in Santa Clara, California, where the degree programs are located; however, employees are also expected to spend a day per week in Santa Cruz as needed for meeting with Santa Cruz campus faculty and staff. The Coordinator will conduct outreach to both industry and potential students, and thus may be required to travel to conferences, such as Game Developers Conference, as well as attend game festivals and conferences. The Coordinator will work with the Vice Chair of the Games and Playable Media MS program, the Vice Chair of the Serious Games MS program, the Computational Media Department Chair, and the Graduate Student Advisor. 

The Coordinator will establish and maintain inter-institutional relationships with faculty and staff at colleges and universities that are likely to send students to our programs. The Coordinator is expected to attend the NAGAP (Association for Graduate Enrollment Management) Annual Conference.

An important goal of the position is to improve the diversity of the student population. The Coordinator will be required to participate in diversity-oriented activities and conferences (such as the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing); meet with student groups who support diversity during campus visits; and participate in campus visits/graduate school fairs at Hispanic Serving Institutions and Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
Salary Information: $73,300 - $104,600/annually. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Duties
35% - Develop strategic marketing and branding plan:
  • Develop a strategic plan for marketing and branding of both Games and Playable Media and Serious Games programs. Develop a brand for advertising for both the Games and Playable Media and the Serious Games programs. Develop analytics methods to determine marketing and yield using data. Identify potential students and target markets and how to reach them.

30% - Perform marketing and branding activities:
  • Develop social media and viral marketing materials and distribute based on the developed strategic plan. Provide information about higher education generally, and UCSC specifically. Provide in-depth information on admissions requirements, prerequisite courses, school / college programs and curricula, specific financial aid criteria, and career opportunities. Perform outreach via social media, webinars, virtual graduate school fairs, etc. Serve as a liaison between students, parents, colleges / universities, community agencies, and UCSC college / school / department.

25% - Perform communication activities:
  • Plan and attend conferences. Develop content for such visits and materials to distribute.
  • Develop webinars and direct them to appropriate audiences.Plan and attend festivals and conferences. Staff booth or other university presence at events. Develop materials for circulation among internal stakeholders and external prospects, alumni, volunteers, and donors; serve as the primary writer for development and external relations.

Perform yield activities:
  • Ensures promotion of 'brand' identity and maintains and monitors 'brand' communications to both campus and / or medical center and off-campus and / or medical center agencies. Plan and host webinars and in-person events for admitted students. Direct contact with admitted students via phone, video conference, and other communication channels as needed.

5% - Evaluation of outreach and yield effectiveness:
  • Produce an annual report evaluating the effectiveness of outreach and yield efforts over the previous year. Provide recommendations on changes to outreach and yield activities.
  • Assess effectiveness in attracting diverse students to apply to programs.

5% - Professional development:
  • Attend professional development conferences.Read materials, watch videos, take courses related to graduate student outreach.

Maintain relationships:
  • Builds and maintains effective relationships with outside (non-campus and / or medical center affiliated) companies and organizations.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Advanced experience developing branding and marketing materials.
  • Advanced analytical and research skills and experience using analytics and search engine optimization.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population.
  • Advanced ability to interpret and communicate University policies and procedures to prospective students and the public.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with schools, universities, community organizations, and other institutions.
  • Advanced research, writing, editing, and content strategy skills.
  • Experience writing persuasively, as well as using visuals and data, in a communications, marketing, or journalism function is desirable.
  • Advanced research skills and ability to interact with a wide range of stakeholders to gather relevant data with tact, diplomacy, and persistence.
  • Advanced ability to use word processing, photoshop or similar programs, email, presentation, social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, others), and spreadsheet software.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer game development, and computer game culture.
  • Advanced interpersonal communication and political acumen skills.
  • Ability to present information in a clear, engaging manner, using a communication style suited to prospective students.
  • Ability to plan and execute events.
  • Advanced ability to write reports that review and assess a range of variables, and interpret data to form solid conclusions.
  • Advanced knowledge of the typical college admissions cycle, and important outreach activities during each phase of this cycle.
