Reporting to the Director of Sales, Marketing, and Business Development, The Associate Director of Marketing manages the marketing strategy and activities for the Harvard Education Publishing Group (HEPG). This includes marketing of books from the Harvard Education Press (HEP) imprint, which has a backlist of over 300 books and publishes 25+ new titles per year, and the Harvard Educational Review (HER) a quarterly academic journal with a 90 year history. Marketing efforts are designed to reach education practitioners and policymakers. The role requires a high level of creativity and intellectual curiosity, as well as initiative, strategic thinking, flexibility, communication skills, relationship management, project management, resource allocation, and the ability to produce consistently high caliber results.
Leadership Provides direction on critical projects related to strategic planning, implementation, and assessment of marketing all HEPG publications. The Associate Director should have a proven ability to lead and participate in meetings, gain the commitment of others, and communicate in a collaborative working environment. This role requires a demonstrated capability to evaluate problems accurately, make decisions independently, and display good, sound, and confidential judgment.
Marketing Oversees all marketing functions and activities, including: the development, production, and implementation of integrated marketing materials and campaigns; website management; direct marketing; social media; seasonal catalogs; advertising; and exhibits/conferences. Optimizes digital marketing efforts, including search engine optimization.
Evaluation and Data Analysis Evaluates performance of campaigns, including analysis of return on investment as measured in impact and revenue. Assesses the implications of different marketing activities on the publishing program. Makes recommendations based on prior experience. Identifies key metrics and monitors HEPG's results on an ongoing basis. Stays current on marketing and publishing trends and incorporates key learnings into HEPG's practices. Develops periodic quantitative and qualitative reports that will be used for strategic, data-driven decision making. Leads market research efforts to gather insights related to meeting the needs of practitioners and policymakers. Studies the competitive landscape for HEPG's publications.
Management and Operations Manages the HEPG marketing budget, including development, monitoring, forecasting, and strategic resource planning. The Associate Director allocates resources to the highest priorities, based on detailed data analysis. Identifies new tactics and opportunities to meet the demands of a rapidly changing marketplace. Streamlines operations for greater efficiency. The Associate Director manages 1-2 staff, oversees department interns, and hires and supervises freelance copywriters and designers. In addition, the Associate Director identifies vendors, manages vendor relationships, evaluates vendor work, and makes recommendations on ongoing engagements.
Communication Plays a pivotal communications role across HEPG departments, as well as with key external stakeholders including authors, partners, and vendors. Identifies and directs promotional collaboration opportunities with other Harvard departments including, but not limited to, HGSE's Professional Education and Gutman Library. Oversees HEPG's external communications, including through the website, e-newsletters, and social media.
Supporting Publishing Activities Develops critical elements for the publishing process (i.e., book titles, covers, metadata, target audience, pricing, print runs, etc.) in support of new titles. Partners with colleagues in editorial, sales, and production, as well as with authors, to develop and implement successful book releases. Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with authors. Demonstrates a strong focus on and understanding of the target HEPG audience of education practitioners and policymakers. The position requires superb project management skills, excellent relationship-building, and creative thinking. The Associate Director is a strategic innovator and problem-solver.
Special Projects Initiates, leads, and contributes to special projects, as needed, including opportunities to optimize HEPG workflows, test new projects, and expand the HEPG brand. Performs related duties as needed and required.
