JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Associate Director of Communications and Marketing, the Communications & Marketing Officer leads the development, implementation, and tracking of external and internal marketing communications for the Division of Social Sciences at UC Santa Cruz. In collaboration with the Associate Director, the Communications & Marketing Officer will develop an integrated marketing communications plan that includes publications, strategic marketing, advertising, and messaging to advance the division, its academic departments and programs, and its research centers, in line with the goals and objectives established within the division's strategic communications plan
In addition, the incumbent will be proactive in positioning the academic programs, faculty, and research with external constituents. The incumbent will manage the content and presentation of the divisional website and related sites and develop and post relevant information on social media platforms for the division. The incumbent will be responsible for management and development of the division's internal and external marketing and communications related to fundraising and event initiatives with high strategic importance and will orchestrate the planning associated with these efforts. In addition, the incumbent will create other materials, as needed, to cultivate major donors and attract high quality faculty, researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students.
This role may occasionally be called upon to support campus wide initiatives.

JOB DUTIES
80% - Marketing efforts to advance the division's goals
- Under direction of the division's Associate Director of Communications, creates and implements a marketing plan to establish the division's identity and effectively promote and position the division, its academic departments and programs, and its research units in line with the goals and objectives established within the division's strategic communications plan.
- With coordination with the Associate Director of Communications, the incumbent is responsible for external marketing, outreach, advertising, and communication initiatives, and branding of the division.
- Writes, edits, and provides overall coordination of newsletters, web and social media content highlighting the division, academic programs, and research centers.
- Responsible for development of outreach and marketing materials, including writing, editing, and print production. Periodically, writes speeches and talking points for the Dean and others in the division as necessary.
- Is the principal driver of the look and feel of divisional communications, leading art direction for design, photography, video, and other visual assets.
- Oversees divisional and departmental web presence, focusing on outwardly facing content that is both relevant and current. Responsible for designing consistent navigation on departmental sites and working with staff to update and refresh content. Uses technical knowledge to develop a process for identifying and presenting content that should be internally-facing, so that it is not showing to external audiences.
- Develops, oversees the development of, or reviews materials and communications to promote special events, meetings, and other cultivation events and activities that have high strategic value for the division.
- Designs appropriate fundraising materials, including donor recognition, acknowledgment letters, and other templates as needed, and creates key messages and take away pieces for the Dean's leadership councils and support groups.
15% - Administration
- Supervises the accurate maintenance of the division's electronic and paper files related to marketing communications.
- Supports the coordination of communications contractors on marketing-related projects to ensure consistency with marketing strategies and divisional brand/aesthetic/voice
- Tracks and reports progress toward marketing-related objectives and strategies for the division's strategic communications plan
5% - Miscellaneous
- Participates in campus-wide media and communications initiatives as needed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Experience in developing and implementing all aspects of effective marketing and public relations plans, preferably for science or social justice focused educational programs.
- The ability to work and interact effectively with people who have different skills, backgrounds and experiences.
- Strong written communications skills. Demonstrated ability to compose and edit copy for the web, social media, publications, and other marketing and development materials.
- Strong oral communication skills.
- Ability to critique work accurately and professionally and to accept edits and changes from multiple parties.
- Working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations, and volunteer relations practices.
- Experience in developing effective promotional materials for target audiences.
- Experience in working with graphic designers and other outside contractors to develop marketing pieces from concept to implementation.
- Experience with Adobe Creative suite, Wordpress, and/or Drupal, and social media apps.
- Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships both within the university and with external constituencies.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Good technical understanding of analytics and search engine optimization and methods for tracking the impact of marketing communications.
- Understanding the research, teaching and public service conducted at a major research university.
- Working understanding of communications and marketing programs at a major university.
- Working knowledge of Macintosh computers.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Must be able to work remotely from a home office and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
- Will be required to work a hybrid work schedule, days of the week and number of days to be determined, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
- Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
