Departmental Overview
UC Berkeley's College of Engineering (Berkeley Engineering) is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Marketing and Social Media Specialist to join a high-functioning team that promotes the inspiring people, research and programs of one of the premier engineering colleges in the world.
Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Marketing and Communications, the Marketing and Social Media Specialist will develop accurate, informative and engaging content for key audiences, including students, alumni and the broader public. Content ranges from discovery briefs to award announcements, and program highlights to profiles. Material developed will appear on our website, social media channels, print magazine, brochures, email and more. Content should highlight the college's societal impact and leadership in engineering research and education.
This job includes flexibility for remote work, but there is an in-person meeting one day per week, and periodic on-site support needed for events.
Berkeley Engineering is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three engineering colleges in the United States. With more than 245 regular faculty members and 6,600 students enrolled in seven academic departments, engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus. The Marketing and Communications team supports the college's core projects and programs by leveraging its various channels of communication, including the main website, a semi-annual print magazine and social media channels. Responsibilities
Under minimal supervision, identifies and creates compelling content that highlights the people and activities at Berkeley Engineering for multiple audiences. This includes faculty profiles, award announcements and event coverage. Tailors content to different audiences, including students, faculty, alumni, donors and external media.
Writes polished, accurate copy under tight deadlines for various publication platforms, including Berkeley Engineering's website, social media channels, print magazine and brochures.
Manages multiple social media accounts for the college (including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn) using best practices in communications. Tracks emerging trends in social media and digital storytelling and utilizes them effectively.
Coordinates the design, production and distribution of promotional materials, including web briefs, email, brochures, flyers, A/V presentations, etc.
Proofreads and edits material submitted by colleagues, as needed, to enhance style and readability appropriate to the target audience.
Collaborates with fellow Marketing and Communications team members to develop and execute long- and short-term strategic communications plans.
Keeps abreast of news and trends relevant to engineering to help Berkeley Engineering be proactive in its communications.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
4-6 years' experience as a social media, public relations or marketing professional, or equivalent experience/training.
Exceptional writing, editing, researching and interviewing skills; knowledge of AP style a plus.
Excellent news judgment and knowledge of which platforms would be more appropriate for reaching specific audiences.
Attention to detail and comfortable handling data.
Strong organizational and analytical skills; ability to juggle multiple tasks and to work well under tight deadlines.
Thrives in a collaborative team environment, while able to work independently.
Strong interpersonal skills and political acumen.
Tech savvy and proficient with common social media publishing and monitoring platforms (e.g. Sprout Social, Tweetdeck, Hootsuite).
Demonstrated ability/willingness to learn quickly.
Preferred Qualifications
A strong and nuanced knowledge of current affairs, developments in technology, and issues in higher education.
Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud apps, particularly Photoshop and InDesign.
Experience working with content management systems such as WordPress and Drupal.
Proficient with Google Suite and MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
Knowledge of college and campus protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.

This is a 100% FTE career position with full benefits.

The salary range designated for this position: $74,300 - $104,400; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
