Develops, manages, and oversees a marketing and communications strategy and operations for the Polsky Center that aligns with the Centerâ™s strategic priorities focused on technology transfer, science innovation, entrepreneurial education, event and instructional programming as well as community entrepreneurship and engagement. Ensures that all marketing, communications, public and external relations as well as thought leadership plans ladder up to this integrated marketing strategy. Â Tracks progress against goals.
Supervises three full-time staff members on the Polsky Center marketing and communications team. Develops team members by providing mentorship and professional development opportunities. As needed, assists with recruiting, orienting, and training new employees.Â Manages any additional contract or intern employees in the same manner.
Manages relationships with external agencies, vendors, freelancers, consultants, and contractors hired to support marketing and communication projects for the Polsky Center.
Oversees and manages the budget for all marketing and communication initiatives, employee compensation and reconciles expenses to the budget as required. Collaborates with the Head of Polsky and other members of the Polsky leadership team in the budget planning process.
Develops close relationships with marketing and communications, admissions, and alumni relations and development staff at Chicago Booth, with central University Communications, across the University of Chicago system, and with external partners and collaborators. Works with these contacts to partner with the Polsky Center as appropriate and ensures that all communications about the Polsky Center and its mission are shared across multiple channels.
Oversees campaigns for new and existing initiatives at the Polsky Center, ensuring awareness of those initiatives among relevant audiences. Works with team members to develop new, creative campaigns to drive further awareness and engagement.
Oversees the creation of all promotional and informative materials (including press releases, presentations, print material, social media, videos, and other media) that will be shared with audiences both internal and external to the University of Chicago.
Manages the brand identity for the Polsky Center, ensuring that all marketing and communications deliver a consistent brand experience across channels. Coordinates with senior leadership to ensure alignment reflects broader Polsky strategy.
Identifies key partner organizations in the broader entrepreneurial community that can amplify the Polsky Centerâ™s work.
As appropriate, represents the Polsky Center at internal and external events, including delivering presentations, participating on panels, and networking to establish Polsky Center visibility.Â
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional organizations.
Works across a broad spectrum of communications and marketing verticals from education to consumer to science and technical.
Plans, develops, designs and implements strategic and tactical marketing plans for a department or program. Directs, monitors and evaluates marketing communication and research programs.
Provides leadership and supervision to staff, including selection and development of staff.
Performs other related work as needed.
Bachelor's degree in English, marketing, communications or journalism.Â
MBA or master's degree in journalism/communications/marketing.Â Â
A minimum seven years of experience in marketing/communications, writing and/or editing via prior experience in a similar position or through verifiable training in writing, editing, or marketing.Â
Prior experience supervising a team.
At least three years of experience with project coordination.Â
At least two years of experience in managing websites (e.g., HTML, Dreamweaver).Â Â
Technical Skills or Knowledge:
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.Â
Experience in design (e.g. InDesign, Photoshop) and web (e.g., HTML, website content management platforms).
Working knowledge of a variety of media, including social media, print, and web communications.Â
Effectively and expeditiously implement communications initiatives.Â
Excellent written and verbal communications skills.Â
Resourcefulness, creativity, detail-orientation, and ability to work independently.Â
Effectively multi-task under deadlines, ask questions as necessary.Â
Outstanding professional/interpersonal/customer service skills.Â
Work well with staff at all levels of the organization as well as vendors, service providers, and other external constituents.Â
Flexible and work evening hours, on occasion.Â
Demonstrated ability to grow a startupâ™s marketing and communications presence is highly preferred.
This position is currently expected to work a minimum three days per week in the office.
Travel between Hyde Park, downtown Chicago, and 53rd Street.Â
