The Director of Development Marketing and Communications will develop, implement, evaluate and refine comprehensive communication and marketing strategies for all areas of athletics development including the annual fund, major gifts, capital campaign, events and stewardship, and alumni engagement.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: The Director will be responsible for creative and measurable communications and marketing plans for athletics fundraising that encompass advertising, market research, publications, digital and social media, as well as other aspects of strategic marketing and communications. The Director will use innovative, data-driven marketing strategies to drive growth of the donor base for annual and major gifts, and to strengthen the philanthropic message of the Terrapin Club. In collaboration with the Senior Assistant AD of Marketing Strategy & Fan Experience and members of the external operations team, the Director will also lead the scheduling, deployment, and analysis of all Maryland Athletics email communications. The Director will collaborate closely with the Communications, Marketing, and Broadcast & Production units in the Athletic Department and University Relations and perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required.
Preferences: Prior experience working in higher education, a non-profit organization and/or an intercollegiate athletic environment preferred.
Experience:
- Five (5) years of experience in strategic marketing and/or communications.
- Experience building marketing campaigns focused on member acquisition & retention and revenue generation.
- Experience in writing and design, preferably for fundraising/development purposes.
- Prior experience in using data to drive marketing planning and decision-making.
- Experience managing and creating content for social media.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent written and oral communications skills.
- Ability to set priorities, handle multiple assignments and deadlines, and display good judgment while operating in a flexible and professional manner.
- Highly developed organizational and project management skills.
- Customer-service orientation.
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively.
- Strong capabilities in website design, branding and content management.
- Exceptional computer skills; experience and comfort using marketing automation platforms.
- Initiative and independent thinking, planning and decision-making.
- Ability to attend and interact with donors and prospective donors at Terrapin Club events and athletic competitions.
- Good understanding of the values of a public higher education institution and collegiate athletics, and the ability to articulate these values to internal and external constituents.
- Knowledge of the laws, policies, rules and regulations governing the University, the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (“the NCAA”).
