Taxation - Director Tax Membership Marketing and Diversity

Principal job within the Tax Section responsible for creating an environment that maximizes the membership value proposition of both ABA and Tax Section membership.   Responsible for recruiting, retaining, and increasing the diversity of the Section membership and promoting a culture of inclusion within the Tax Section.  Also responsible for advancing Diversity and Inclusion Plan of Section and for implementing diversity and inclusion initiatives.  Further responsible for the growth of dues and non?dues revenue, including revenue from sponsorship and advertising.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

-Develops, deploys, tests, and implements tools and programs for growing both Tax Section and ABA membership.   Assesses potential barriers and develops strategies to recruit and retain a diverse and inclusive membership.

-Supervises sponsorship efforts, including coordinating with sponsorship consultant on marketing and offerings. Reports on sponsorship results.  In cooperation with Meetings staff, ensures sponsorship deliverables are completed, including onsite at in-person meetings.

-Functions as the primary interface with ABA’s Chief Membership Officer and his/her staff to ensure alignment of membership/marketing goals and objectives to ensure consistency of messaging and timeliness of communications.

-Works across the Tax Section to integrate the Tax Section’s diversity and inclusion goals with the Tax Section’s other goals and activities.   Routinely interfaces with and supports the Tax Section’s leadership and the relevant committees devoted to increasing membership and implementing diversity and inclusion initiatives.

-Advances the Tax Section’s Diversity and Inclusion Plan and has primary responsibility for Plan items related to membership.   Reviews and assesses the impact and effectiveness of diversity and inclusion initiatives.  Leverages the Section’s best practices and resources to promote a culture of diversity and  inclusion.

-Creates, tests, deploys, and tracks the effectiveness of marketing plans, programs, conversion rates, and similar metrics which validate the spend on recruitment/retention of new members.

-Conducts research to determine the most effective methods for increasing the participation and success of underrepresented member groups including early-career lawyers, academics, government and public service lawyers, women lawyers, lawyers of color. LGBTQ+ lawyers, and disabled lawyers.  Administers programs aimed at increasing diversity and promoting inclusion in the Section’s membership.

-Develops membership related mail pieces, brochures, advertisements, and special promotions for the Tax Section and ensures that such materials are aligned with ABA branding standards and do not conflict with other ABA messaging/timing.

-Plays an integral role in the development of marketing materials that position Section events as meaningful, professionally rewarding, and as the principal source of Tax learning, education, and networking.

-Provides leadership, direction, coaching, counseling, performance feedback, and, when appropriate, discipline to assigned supervisees.

-Helps develop training programs promoting diversity and inclusion for leadership, staff, and members.

-Works with Section leadership to periodically amend the Section’s Diversity and Inclusion Plan.

-Performs other related duties as required.
 Required Education, Qualifications, Experience

-Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

-At least five years’ experience leading membership and/or diversity and/or marketing activities for a not?for?profit entity.

-Passion for expanding diversity and inclusion efforts and creative thinking.

Preferred Education, Qualifications, Experience

-Previous experience focusing on diversity initiatives and/or working in an environment with lawyers, ideally tax lawyers.
