Learn more about the UC Office of the President DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW External Relations and Communications is focused on increasing public understanding and support for the university and communicating UC's value and impact on the lives of people in our local communities, California and the nation. We help establish and strengthen relationships with outside constituencies such as alumni, business and industry facilitating support for the university, in coordination with campuses, we also conduct policy analysis for the university. ER&C Division focuses on sustained efforts to expand, manage, cultivate and advance positive and ongoing stakeholder relationships through the following functions: Executive Communications Federal Governmental Relations Institutional Advancement and Constituent Relations Institutional Communications Legislative Analysis Marketing Communications Media Relations State Governmental Relations UC Health Communications POSITION SUMMARY Reporting to the SVP, External Relations & Communications, the Chief Brand Officer and Director of Marketing is responsible for the stewardship, planning, and development of communications strategies to support affinity for and recognition and understanding of the University of California writ large. The incumbent develops communications and marketing strategies to support ongoing programs or efforts underway at the 10 campuses, five medical centers, and three National Laboratories. The role is responsible for supporting, directing and consulting to multiple areas of the organization outside of the External Relations & Communications (ER&C) division as well as across ER&C to develop and execute digital, print, out-of-home, and other communications programs to enhance the public's understanding of UC's contributions to California and beyond. The position directly supports state and federal relations communications and advocacy programs and works with each campus to execute campaigns. This position also works closely with other Office of the President units and third-party entities to create compelling and successful marketing communications campaigns, programs and efforts in areas such as admissions, transfer student support, and advocacy for the university where a single campus effort would not establish the broadest and most impactful case for the University. The role further ensures that institutional goals and priorities are communicated and ensures that policies for brand stewardship, compliance and adoption are adhered to in the form of licensing and trademarks for university marks/assets. The incumbent provides executive leadership, oversight and management, setting systemwide messaging and specialized outreach strategies and activities. These efforts include activities such as leading market research to determine most effective messages for adoption systemwide, assess brand health and evaluate the efficacy of marketing efforts; overseeing paid outreach across all digital, print and out-of-home; overseeing the overarching external communications' strategies that relate to marketing communications and acting as the lead departmental contact for campus brand and marketing interactions, senior UCOP leadership and other units at UCOP.
