The Office of Communications and Public Affairs oversees all external marketing and communication for the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). In addition, the department handles internal communications for UMB's faculty, staff, and students, assists UMB's schools with planning and executing their marketing and communications, and assists with philanthropic communications to various internal and external audiences.

Provide leadership to and execute marketing strategies, programs, and communications to further the mission of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and Office of Communications and Public Affairs (OCPA). Develop and implement comprehensive, innovative internal and external communications strategies, plans, and materials aligned with the University's initiatives.
Develop and manage a consistent image and message for the University that promotes UMB's mission, vision, and brand, and enhances the reputation of UMB.
Manage the production of a range of printed, design, and electronic materials for UMB's administrative units and schools to support the marketing and communications in a manner that reflects a unified UMB identity. Direct the development and implementation of projects, including design copy, layout, illustrations, final art, and photography. Produce communications for key initiatives and programs to enhance the reputation of UMB in the external community.
Liaise with key administrative departments and schools as necessary to ensure the timely development and implementation of creative strategies and to ensure brand consistency. Build and sustain partnership relationships with other campus offices or departments or with external organizations, corporations, or schools to advance the mission and programs of UMB.
Provide marketing advice and support to UMB's administrative units and schools to ensure they have access to and produce quality communications.
Create a cohesive work team that works collaboratively to achieve OCPA's goals and mission. Oversee the recruitment, performance, and training of team members, and continually review strengths and weaknesses of staff to maintain a well-trained, highly involved, and motivated team.

Education: Bachelor's degree, such as English, journalism, or communications
Experience: Six (6) years of experience in marketing, public relations, communications, or media, public or client relations. Experience in higher education preferred.
Supervisory Experience: Two (2) years of experience at a management or leadership level
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Possess an in-depth knowledge of best practices in the marketing and public relations as well as all relevant federal, state, and local rules, regulations, programs, and policies for meeting compliance. Able to establish goals, structure, and processes necessary to implement a mission and strategic vision of University. Skilled in leadership, coaching and team-building to strength and cultivate relationships. Able to make independent decisions that are a matter of significance for the unit. Self-motivated and desire to learn, with a pro-active attitude towards tasks, strong project management skills, and work under pressure of strict periodic deadlines managing multiple projects.
Effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Write and present information in a clear and concise way. Interpret and understand written information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding.
Work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others. Demonstrate pleasant and positive interactions with other to meet customer expectations, and provide follow up with customers. Effectively negotiate with a broad range of internal and external individuals or agency representatives. Communicate complex issues at the highest levels of management. Reach compromise and consensus to influence and negotiate. Remain calm and manage conflict, and works well with a diverse workforce. Utilize a collaborative and approachable management style allows others to be open in sharing thoughts and ideas.
