HERC is seeking a dynamic, strategic, creative, collaborative, and technically savvy Marketing and Communications Director (MCD). The MCD is a key member of the Central HERC leadership team and plays a critical role in advancing HERC’s mission and strategic plan. The MCD is responsible for elevating HERC’s brand and communicating its impact to HERC’s key stakeholders: member institutions, job seekers, regional directors and advisory board members, non-profit partners, and corporate sponsors.
The position requires an individual who is passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion, is highly organized, has strong interpersonal skills, has excellent written and verbal communications skills, possesses the ability to manage several competing priorities, and works well both independently and in teams. The individual should be comfortable working with a fully remote team.
The MCD reports to HERC’s Executive Director. Due to the small size of the Central HERC team, the Marketing and Communications Director supervises a network of talented contractors, including bloggers, designers, web developers, social media coordinators, and filmmakers. This is an exempt position. Exempt employees are expected to work the appropriate and necessary time in order to complete key assignments and related tasks on schedule.
The Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC) catalyzes inclusive excellence in the academic workforce. HERC diversifies the pipeline of faculty, staff, and executives in academia and provides its 700+ member institutions with networks and resources to bolster equitable, inclusive recruitment and retention practices.
HERC advances diversity and distinction in the higher education workforce by promoting higher education careers to those who are historically underrepresented in the academic workforce. HERC provides outreach, advertising, a jobs board, and expert career advice to these talented candidates. In particular, HERC encourages people of color, veterans, professionals with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, women in STEM, and dual career couples to transition into, and advance in, higher education careers.
HERC is a national, nonprofit coalition of over 700 colleges, universities, hospitals, research labs, government agencies, and related non- and for-profit organizations. Founded in 2000, HERC has expanded to include 19 unique regions throughout the United States.
The MCD will advance HERC’s mission through two primary responsibilities.
Bringing the most talented and diverse candidates to HERC’s job board (www.hercjobs.org)
Supporting regional HERC chapters in recruiting, engaging, and retaining member institutions (member.hercjobs.org).
This will be done through tasks including:
Create and manage overall marketing and communications strategy
Establish and execute multi-channel communications efforts for current and prospective member and job seeker audiences
Develop and adhere to editorial calendar, including content on hercjobs.org and member.hercjobs.org, and customized eNewsletters
Define HERC’s story and voice through national messaging guidelines
Produce content relevant to job seekers at all stages of their higher ed careers
Stay abreast of latest messaging around diversity, equity, and inclusion issues
Manage social media coordinator and bloggers
Direct annual reports, promotional videos, partner/sponsor materials, member testimonials, websites, etc.
Set standards for, and design, templates for regional HERCs
In conjunction with HERC’s Technology Director, manage web designers and developers to ensure a smooth user experience for job seeker- and member-focused sites (hercjobs.org and member.hercjobs.org)
Monitor, initiate, and respond to, member conversations
Draft thought leadership pieces
Pitch to higher education/diversity-focused outlets
Develop relationships with reporters covering higher education
Graphic design using tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign or similar
MailChimp or similar
Asana or similar
Higher Logic or similar
Familiarity with social media including trends, technology tools, and communication best practices
Understanding and appreciation of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles
Experience working remotely
At least 3 years experience developing and implementing communication plans
Experience working in non-profit, government, higher education, or business environment
Authorized to work in the US without sponsorship

This is a fully remote position. HERC reimburses a portion of internet and phone bills.
Must be willing to travel up to 10% to advisory board meetings, Central HERC Team retreats, jobseeker recruitment events, and regional HERC conferences.
