This position has a planned start date of January 1, 2020.
Responsible for planning, development and implementation of all of the Convention Center’s cross-channel marketing and communications activities, both external and internal. Oversees the creation of branded support collateral and services. Interfaces with the San Diego Tourism Authority in coordinating marketing efforts. Directs the efforts of a cross-functional team and coordinates at the strategic and tactical levels with the other functions of the Convention Center.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develops and oversees cross-channel marketing and communications strategy, including digital and print collateral. Establish strategic goals for the team.
Ensure high levels of brand consistency and efficiency across all platforms, internal and external.
Responsible for content strategy, including editorial direction, voice and tone for each audience and medium.
Establishes social media strategy and the development of campaigns, goals and KPIs. Analyzes performance and stays up-to-date on emerging trends. Oversees content calendar.
Manages a diversely skilled staff of four, overseeing writing, video production, photography, communications, design, web development and branding projects. Establishes project timelines and deadlines, prioritize projects requests, delegates responsibilities and updates leadership on project status.
Acts as a consultant with other departments on internal communications initiatives. Understands the business needs and ensures that deliverables are relevant and effective. Meets with internal stakeholders to explain strategies and solutions.
Coordinates key messaging and marketing materials with the President & CEO, Executive Team and Board of Directors.
Develops ideas and opportunities for feature articles, interviews, presentations, and other community and public relations activities that promote awareness of the Corporation and its product and services. Maintains ongoing dialogue and positive relationship with local media and national trade media. Act as contact to assist local/visiting media; fields media inquiries. Creates opportunities for keeping the Corporation and its products and services in front of the public and the trade.
Responsible for crisis management communications plan.
Oversees major departmental projects including the production of the annual San Diego Attendee Guide, website redesign, client newsletters, annual report and various communications collateral.
Serve as spokesperson as needed for media and public speaking engagements, as well as the Corporation’s online presence. Supports approved public relations program to educate the community and enhance the image of the Corporation. These include but are not limited to brochures, marketing materials, displays/signage, videos, and social media resources.
Assists in preparation of annual department budget, authorizes expenditures, and tracks project costs to control expenses.
Directly supervises employees in the Communications Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; and eight to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to remain in an office at computer work station and access information from a computer. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the Communications department suite, as well as maneuver throughout the Convention Center facility to attend meetings, briefings, and photo or video shoots. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

The employee’s office is located above a parking structure and does not have immediate access to windows. Indoor HVAC unit monitors and controls temperature and air flow. Lighting provided by overhead bulbs and lamps. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate and could include persons in the office suite walking past the offices engaged in conversation. Frequent computer use at a workstation. Frequent interaction with employees, clients, vendors, and the general public via email, telephone, delivery correspondence, and/or face-to-face. While maneuvering throughout facility and on the show floor, employees may be exposed to moving mechanical parts and equipment, such as forklifts and electric carts, as well as loud noises originating from the use of individual and multiple quantities of mechanical equipment. The employee is occasionally exposed to exhaust fumes and airborne particles.
