Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley's College of Engineering is globally recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. Berkeley Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus, with more than 230 regular faculty members and over 5,000 students enrolled in seven academic departments.

The Engineering College Relations office supports the College's core projects and programs through marketing, communications, and fundraising efforts designed to reach over 70,000 alumni, friends, students, foundations, and corporate partners.

The Marketing Communications Specialist reports directly to the Assistant Dean of Marketing and Communications, and works in close collaboration with other members of the Marketing and Communications team. Responsibilities include developing, implementing, and executing comprehensive, multi-faceted communications programs in support of the College of Engineering - regularly working in several integrated communications disciplines, including written/print, digital, visual, and broadcast/video communications.


Responsibilities

60% Creates engaging content within budget and time constraints that is of a high professional caliber for a variety of written, visual and electronic communications.

  • Publications include handouts, brochures, slide decks, online materials, advertisements, press releases, signage and exhibits.
  • Ensures that content is accurate, well researched and well written

*Follows college and campus brand guidelines, when appropriate

Works with college leadership and Marketing and Communications team members to create and develop strategic communications plans and/or projects.

  • Advises and consults with departmental/college administration regarding best practices for executing strong communications strategies that effectively deliver the desired message and marketing goals.
  • Identifies specific communications needs and develops the content and process for organizational improvements.

*Reviews and benchmarks best practices for communications initiatives and programs on campus and beyond to advance and improve the college's communications program.

Special projects and other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

This is a Part-time (50%), Career position

  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communications; solid active listening skills and political acumen.
  • Proven ability to quickly and accurately translate technical/scientific research and concepts into compelling content for a broad audience.
  • Thorough knowledge and skills to advise and consult with managers, faculty, and College leadership to ensure delivery of the desired message to target and/or broad general audiences.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of marketing communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
  • Excellent news judgment and knowledge of which platforms would be more appropriate for reaching specific audiences.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills; ability to juggle multiple tasks and to work well under tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
  • Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of the College of Engineering and its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education.
  • Knowledge of campus protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
  • Experience with content management systems such as Drupal and Wordpress preferred.

  • The hourly salary range designated for this position: $67,500 - $98,900 (Full-time equivalent); however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
  • This position is 50% Full-Time Equivalent.
