![]() Associate Vice President of Communications, Marketing and Media Relations University of California Office of the President Requisition Number: 20190159 Appointment Type: Staff - Career Personnel Program: MSP Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm Percentage of Time: 100% Organizational Area: External Relations - Communications Location: Oakland, CA Posting Salary: Position Summary: UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT OF COMMUNICATIONS, MARKETING, AND MEDIA RELATIONS The University of California Office of the President (UCOP) seeks an experienced leader with broad expertise in marketing and communications, strong management experience, and a track record of innovation and collaboration to become the new Associate Vice President (AVP) of Communications, Marketing, and Media Relations. The AVP serves as the primary counselor and partner on internal and external communications and marketing for the Senior Vice President for External Relations & Communications, who is a direct report to the President of the University of California. The AVP provides leadership and strategic direction over all aspects of UCOP's marketing communications, internal communications, media relations, and executive communications units to proactively communicate UC's systemwide brand and advance its messaging. The AVP manages a 37-person team in four departments that have broad impact on UCOP's statewide and national strategies: Marketing Communications, Executive Communications and Engagement, Institutional Communications, and Strategic Communications/Media Relations. The AVP also supports the preparation and delivery of topics that are of strategic interest to the UC Regents' Public Engagement and Development Committee, leads the development of effective public engagement strategies for the President, and engages with and supports the work of colleagues at the UC campuses. The AVP will have sophisticated skills in communications strategy development, including in digital, earned, and paid media management, advocacy, outreach, and stakeholder engagement. A track record of positioning a marketing and/or communications organization to embrace innovation and collaboration across the spectrum of communications disciplines is vital. The successful candidate will have expert project management skills and the ability to establish clarity around mission and goals and to lead a team to develop goals in alignment with mission. Experience leading change in a complex, decentralized organization with multiple stakeholders and ways of measuring value is important, as is the ability to lead collaboratively and to act persuasively in sensitive situations. The successful candidate will have proven ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals. A bachelor's degree in a related area is required, an advanced degree preferred.
