The Marketing and Communication division is seeking a Senior Director of Communications for Research and Strategic Academic Initiatives that will serve as the university's editor-in-chief for its research enterprise, with primary responsibility for capturing and articulating the research-related stories that capture and bring alive this remarkable institution, coordinating the channels through which those stories are told, and ensuring execution at the highest level.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Content and Communications, you will manage research and economic development communications activities in alignment with CMU's research priorities. In this role, you will be responsible for developing a strategy for communicating about our research and economic development activities in a comprehensive way, and ensuring that communications activities are carried out consistent with the strategy. In coordination with the Vice President of Research for CMU, you will oversee initiatives such as Simon Initiative, Neuroscience, and Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship, while also providing support for our business engagement and economic development programs.
Core responsibilities will include:
Develop communications and marketing strategy to raise the visibility of the Carnegie Mellon Research Enterprise;
Create and promote research news through proper channel and platforms;
Direct and implement research news and outreach strategies to support the university's research and economic development initiatives;
Oversee website content for research news;
Organize and supervise research communications staff (two-person team) and freelancers;
Strong technical writing and editing ability;
Support corporate and foundation relation communication activities;
Develop and maintain relationships with sponsor organizations and unit/research communicators;
Coordinate and collaborate with the senior director of news and media relations on the innovative use of social media, media relations and storytelling;
Newsroom and campaign style planning to ensure long-term success of message penetration;
Work closely with key staff to shape important communications planning and the most effective communications team, and to ensure consistent messaging across channels; and
Collaborate across the university with college and school communicators to ensure research is positioned correctly and communications are done effectively and efficiently.

You will demonstrate:
Experience in writing strategic communications & marketing plans;
Deep understanding of content and content marketing;
Science, research and technology technical writing experience and the ability to make complex material easily digestible to a variety of audiences;
Strong writer and editor/ability to write for different audiences utilizing different forms of storytelling;
Superior news judgement;
Multimedia capabilities (photography, video, web) a plus;
Work independently and effectively, and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment;
A high level of integrity, trustworthiness, respect and team collaboration; and
Research skills and business acumen with a fluency in topical news and culture.
Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, business or some other relevant field; Master's highly desired.
Minimum twelve years as a leader in multi-channel content creation.
Management experience required; ability to lead and inspire a campus of content creators and creative personnel to achieve goals.
Ability to work after hours and on weekends when appropriate.
