General Summary/Purpose:

The Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering teaches students to think creatively while drawing upon mathematics and scientific principles to tackle difficult, real-world problems. The school is home to fifteen bachelor’s, fourteen master’s and ten doctoral full-time programs in nine academic departments. Engineering for Professionals is a division of the Whiting School of Engineering that administers online and part-time graduate master’s programs in 21 disciplines, including certificates. Students take courses online and, in some cases, on-site at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, MD.

This position is the primary responsible party and point person for managing Johns Hopkins Whiting School’s Engineering for Professionals’ (EP) student and faculty recruitment activities, including managing the content and effectiveness of EP’s online recruitment and application tools, with additional responsibilities for identifying and attending key recruitment events and coordinating internal and external marketing communications. The Assistant Director will also assist with prospective student recruitment initiatives for the full-time graduate programs at the Whiting School. The Assistant Director will serve as the principal liaison responsible for creating an efficient, personalized recruitment experience for prospective students and faculty. The ideal candidate will be a charismatic professional with the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively in a team environment.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating recruitment events (e.g., open houses, education fair and tradeshow participation) to attract a diverse pool of students and instructors; working with the director of marketing and media buyer to strategize and execute marketing campaigns to bolster success of recruitment events; represent EP and the school at approximately 7-10 recruitment events throughout the Baltimore-Washington region and nationally.
  • Overseeing effective use and maintenance of student recruitment tools, to include reviewing and contributing to content to attract and recruit prospective students and usher them through the application process.
  • Monitoring marketing dashboards and data from marketing automation systems to help inform the development of ongoing strategic communications and follow-up marketing activities.
  • Working with program and department chairs to orchestrate and execute online information sessions in the fall and spring to attract and inform prospective students; serving as the lead coordinator and manager for these virtual sessions.
  • Assisting with the development and tracking of recruitment advertising campaigns (email, print, online, social, radio).
  • Facilitating the creation of recruitment materials (e.g., brochures, flyers, course catalog, and direct mail initiatives), to include reviewing content, proofreading, and ushering materials through internal review processes.
  • Acting as the liaison and primary point of contact to program chairs, admissions/registration office, outside consultants, and vendors.
  • Responding to inquiries from prospective students, corporate partners, and other audiences.
  • Assisting the central Whiting School of Engineering marketing and communications office in projects of shared interest among the full-time/on-site and part-time/online programs.
  • Assisting in establishing the position responsibilities and overseeing the work of the recruitment coordinator.
  • Tracking budgets and recruitment/marketing expenditures as needed.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Advertising, Public Relations, or related area.
  • 4 years of related work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years or more years of related work experience. 
  • Experience with HTML is a plus.
  • Experience working in recruitment or communications office of an educational institution, nonprofit, or private firm.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills (writing/editing test may be administered).
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, and organizational and creative fluency.
  • Requires working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of other marketing automation systems and email marketing platforms is highly desirable.
  • Experience working in recruitment or communications office of an educational institution, nonprofit, or private firm; willingness to help formulate new strategies.
  • Ability to evaluate effectiveness of current recruitment efforts against targets and benchmarks and recommend alternatives as needed.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
