We are looking for a Marketing & Communications Storyteller, a strong communications professional to create compelling external communications for Houghton College, a nationally recognized Christian College located in Western New York. Today, Houghton students hail from over 30 states and nearly 40 countries and are described by the Wall Street Journal as being the most supportive and collaborative in the country.
In addition to increasing the exposure for the college’s educational, event and outreach programs, you’ll serve as the primary conduit to connect content contributors across internal departments, honing the voices of our college collective into a consistent, cohesive voice across multiple media platforms.
What You’ll Do:
In this role, you will support college administration, academic departments and the office of admission and their teams as they globally communicate the mission, vision and impact of Houghton College. You’ll be ultimately responsible for telling the many stories of Houghton College in a way that compels readers to learn more, take action and join the conversation.
You’ll actively work with campus leaders, educators and alumni, highlighting the impact on the world and the Kingdom of God that results from receiving an education from Houghton College.

Each Day, You Will:
Work quickly without compromising quality, knowing that iteration and testing are part-and-parcel to designing exceptional user experiences and driving engagement.
Take initiative while asking thoughtful questions and constantly seeking better ways of working and communicating.
Work with an active network of educators, alumni and press agents to manage and collect content and organize and edit the content for style, grammar, brevity and clarity.
Intuitively recognize and capitalize on the news value when investigating initiatives, interviewing and engaging campus residents and visitors.
Actively seek, write and promote stories about Houghton that enhance the college’s image and reputation while supporting the institution’s overall mission and purposes.
Write and edit for communication on and off campus: press releases, web content, Houghton magazine, etc.
Write scripts and speeches for Houghton events and awards
Hire and manage storytelling interns.
Collaborate with social media coordinator to ensure maximum social media coverage of content.
Create a public relations plan that seeks to increase the visibility of the college and expand the college’s media presence locally, regionally and nationally.
Develop long-term, positive relationships with the media, campus contacts and broader community; cultivate networks of story sources both on (faculty and staff) and off (alumni) campus.
Strategically and assertively pitch press releases and story ideas to local, regional, national and religious media contacts; continuously extend and expand coverage into new markets.
Communicate about Houghton to peer universities, CCCU and The Wesleyan Church.
Coordinate publicity for campus events to media and external audiences.
Utilize all available outlets including press releases, print, social media and email.
Serve as point of contact for all crisis or situational communication needs of the college.
Develop position statements to create a coordinated institutional response to important issues.
Prepare and disseminate official Houghton College monthly e-newsletter to approximately 13,000 alumni and friends.
Experience in integrated marketing/public relations (2-6+ yrs)
Strong writing and grammar skills; journalistic writing experience preferred
Exceptional interpersonal communication skills – including face-to-face, on the phone and in formal presentations.
Project management and teamwork skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
Minimum of bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, public relations, integrated marketing communication or related field.
Demonstrated commitment to accuracy and quality of work
Experience with computers and appropriate software for writing news releases, posting releases online, communicating by email, etc.
Ability to recognize and capitalize on the news value of Houghton events, activities and achievements.
Two to five years’ experience working in public relations.
