UMKC is seeking to hire an Assistant Athletic Director for Strategic Communications and Marketing. The person in this role must have demonstrated expertise in strategic marketing and communications with capacity to lead a multifaceted team in a fast-paced environment working to elevate and activate brand awareness of UMKC Athletics.
This position will have oversight over several areas including: strategic communications, media relations, digital media, marketing/promotions, branding, and fan engagement. This position is crucial to creating awareness for UMKC Athletics and UMKC, and collaborating with the KC media market to drive attention for our sports teams. The position will also work with revenue development in the areas of ticket sales and interaction/stewardship of Athletic donors. The position will supervise full time employees and graduate assistants.
The ideal candidate will have advanced knowledge of marketing, fan engagement and sports information, including traditional, digital and social in earned and owned channels. The ability to think strategically, develop plans and programs in support of those strategies and then to lead people to achieve those goals will be vital. The person in this role must be able to work effectively with all types of people. The candidate will be responsible for the assurance that all assigned activities are operated in compliance with institutional, conference and NCAA rules and regulations
Oversight of Athletic media relations, which includes being able to:
Oversight of UMKC Athletics website including creation of season previews, game recaps, team rosters, storytelling, and human interest stories.
Recruitment and supervision of sport specific game day media operations for all home intercollegiate athletics and championship events, including media relations, staffing, scoring, statistics, press conferences, credentialing, and hospitality
Maintain historical data and records
Manage social media promotion of teams
Generate video and photography to promote department and sports teams
Establish and maintain positive and professional relationships, as well as serve as the department's public information and communications contact with local, regional, and national media for UMKC and UMKC Athletics
Direct supervision of the position of Sports Information Director, and indirect supervision of Sports Information Graduate Assistants.
Work closely with UMKC Strategic Marketing and Communications (MCom) to develop, recommend, and implement strategic communications policies and procedures.
Responsible for the assurance that all assigned activities are operated in compliance with institutional, conference and NCAA rules and regulations
Oversight of Athletics marketing, in compliance with campus marketing standards and practices:
Develop and implement the marketing and promotional strategy for 16 UMKC sports.
Develop and implement, with conjunction with Director of Ticketing, single-game promotions for ticketed sports to increase revenues and attendance.
Responsible for the creation of print and digital media for all game programs and fulfillment of sponsorships, including graphic design and strategies for timing and delivery
Digital media promotion of brand and full department
Oversight of brand management and creative processes, in partnership with MCom
Oversight of game-day atmosphere for ticketed sports
Coordinate with Director of Ticketing with regards to implementation of single game promotions to increase revenues and attendance.
Coordinate with UMKC’s Student Life Office to increase student engagement with Athletic Department and also at ticketed sporting events.
Assist Associate Athletic Director for Development in stewardship of gifts
Create and build positive relationships with new donors
A Bachelor's degree in related/relevant area or an equivalent combination of education and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Four to five years of experience in an Athletics Department and two to three years of experience in either a communications or marketing position. Preferred candidates will have management experience and demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with media and stakeholders. Specific skillsets would include marketing research and analysis, market planning, digital and online marketing and communications, media relations and experience with audience engagement. Basic knowledge will include competence in PowerPoint, Excel and other Microsoft Office products.
Successful candidates will be familiar with current Athletics marketing and audience trends and must be a self-starter. They will be strategically focused, team oriented and provide outstanding customer service. Ability to manage many projects both short term and long term at once is needed.
Ability to work with all levels of University and Athletics personnel, including senior University leaders, donors, other external stakeholders.
Desire to work in a fast-paced, professional, collaborative, innovative and flexible environment.
Familiarity with and ability to stay on top of marketing and communications best practices and audience trends.
Experience developing marketing strategies and plans and executing them.
Experience working in a marketing and/or communications environment, and particularly in a university athletic setting is highly desirable.
Experience managing vendors.
Experience reviewing and analyzing data analytics.
