This is a full-time, benefits eligible, at will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.
Under the direction of the Vice President of University Relations and Development who also serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Campanile Foundation, the Associate Vice President and Chief Communications Officer (AVP/CCO) will provide vision and leadership for the university’s strategic communications. Via comprehensive involvement with campus and community, the AVP/CCO will elevate the strategic aspirations of San Diego State University as a leading public research institution.
The AVP/CCO will develop a strong command of issues affecting campus, students, higher education, the community and California in order to provide optimal strategic scenarios for the University President, the Vice President of University Relations and Development and campus senior university leadership.
The AVP/CCO will develop strategies and tactics for both enhancing SDSU’s image and reputation, and for coordinating university messaging through traditional and new media. The AVP/CCO will direct a campus-wide branding and messaging strategy which includes representation from academics, research, athletics students and the office of alumni. S/he will place high priority on understanding issues affecting the university and its students and by anticipating multiple potential strategic outcomes.
The AVP/CCO will foster strong relationships both on and off campus with students, media, community leaders, campus leadership, deans, development officers, athletics and external organizations. S/he will develop and implement a system for harvesting news stories from all campus entities and optimally telling those stories in compelling ways through all available SDSU media.
The AVP/CCO will serve as a primary contact to the news media and work proactively to highlight stories about SDSU’s successes. The AVP/CCO will oversee SDSU’s various Web sites and new media and implement enhancements to better achieve division and university objectives. The AVP/CCO will write and edit a variety of communications materials including news releases, talking points, op-eds, pitch letters, feature stories and fact sheets, that position SDSU as a top urban research university.

A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications, graphic design, English or a related communications field and 7-10 years of experience in media relations and online communications.
Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills
Proven success participating in cross-functional teams and strategic planning processes.
A master's degree within the field of journalism, communications, public relations or a related field.
Specific work experience in a public relations or marketing firm preferred, additional emphasis on crisis and community relations experience.
Work experience in a university communications office or similar setting.
Experience and training in responding to major campus crises.
Demonstrated experience using the Internet as part of a strategic communications/media relations campaign.
Understanding and experience working with new media to achieve communications objectives for a large, complex organization.
Experience and understanding of production of video content for use on the Web.
Experience and demonstrated knowledge in managing electronic communications initiatives, including experience with electronic newsletters, Intranets, Internet and other Web-based communications.
Understanding of Web graphic design programs such as Photoshop and Flash.
Familiarity with cross-platform and browser issues and Web design and content best practices.
Familiarity with usability and Web accessibility standards (Section 508).
Up-to-date knowledge of how to effectively use Web 2.0 technologies including video for the Web.
Demonstrated political acumen, key relationship building, and persuasiveness.
Experience working with a Web content management system.
Experience using Web multimedia programs.
Understanding of HTML, CSS, Web, or other scripting language.
