The Director of Business Development and Marketing is responsible for developing sponsorship and marketing relationships to support alumni engagement. This position will build and implement an affinity program, as well as maintain the affinity partners that already are in contract with VCU Alumni.
Identify, research and solicit clients for financial support for VCU Alumni through the development and execution of a robust sponsorship and advertising program.
Manage a portfolio of 50-100 corporate sponsors.
Cultivate and secure immediate and long-term funding prospects and commitments.
Generate and track client prospects including interests, budgeting cycle, marketing objectives, historical associations with VCU Alumni, philanthropic activities and corporate financial performance.
Identify opportunities for enhanced corporate funding from current partners.
Provide corporate clients and prospects with ongoing service and communication to enhance relationships.
Participate in VCU Alumni development efforts. Represent VCU Alumni to community at large including at university and alumni events.
Coordinate business development activities with development colleagues and track relationships and activities in the university database of record.
Develop and track metrics for success.
Serve as the creative force in the development of corporate sponsorship sales materials, sponsorship appeals, and sponsor-oriented special events and stewardship.
Participate in the development of the promotional aspects of sponsorship and licensing agreements.
Serve as the primary point of contact for all sponsorship, auction item solicitation, fulfillment and coordination of corporate support and involvement for events that includes, but not limited to, vendor contracts and procurement of in-kind goods and services, donations, assisting with solicitations, managing corporate guest lists, tickets and other event fulfillment, acknowledgements, and evaluations.
Must have an advanced degree or training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
8-10 years corporate and/or higher education experience. Includes marketing, sales, business development, and strategic planning experience.
5 years experience in senior management experience with P&L responsibility.
Experience in consultative selling and sales management to corporate clients and professional individuals.
Experience managing large, complex organizations and teams. Experience managing and partnering with diverse internal and external constituents.
Strong entrepreneurial and management skills with experience in business planning and launching new ventures and initiatives. Independent self-starter.
Proven record of accomplishment in achieving aggressive financial, sponsorship, or business goals.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with alumni, faculty, corporate officers, students, and the public in a professional manner that promotes a positive image of VCU Alumni.
Excellent financial management, financial forecasting, and budgeting skills. Analytical skills to assess the financial performance of programs and to develop innovative solutions and improvements.
Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
Ability to express ideas, concepts, and the case for support and program participation clearly and concisely.
Demonstrated ability to represent VCU Alumni in the corporate environment and interact well with a diverse array of people from a variety of professions, including corporate officers.
Outstanding organizational, time-management, and analytical skills to work effectively under the pressure of performance targets and deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize, manage, and execute multiple simultaneous projects, track progress and develop and meet metrics.
Demonstrated ability to work in a flexible, sometimes unstructured environment with minimal supervision.
