The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President of Marketing and Communications, available immediately.
The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra has a rich history that developed from the vision and generosity of George Eastman and continues today to reflect the Rochester community’s deep commitment to the arts and education. The Orchestra was formed in the 1922-23 season, a year after the Eastman School of Music was established at the University of Rochester, and has been bringing music to the greater Rochester community for 94 years.
With the mission “to inspire, educate and engage our community through the art of music,” the RPO today maintains high standards of artistic excellence, a unique tradition of musical versatility, and a deep commitment to education and community engagement. The Orchestra brings music to an audience of more than 170,000 through diverse programming of classical, symphonic pops, educational concerts, and special presentations. The majority of concerts take place at the newly renovated and acoustically excellent Eastman Theatre, but the RPO also performs in schools and community centers throughout the region.
The RPO offers nearly 40 community concerts a year, many of which are free events. Spring and fall Around the Town concerts at area high schools and recreation centers feature concerts with the entire orchestra as well as the ROCmusic Collaborative, an afterschool program for elementary through high school students. Links to the community are strong as evidenced by performances such as the RPO’s annual Nutcracker with the Rochester City Ballet and Bach Children’s Chorus. More than 600 people volunteered last year to serve as ushers, box office concierge, and administrative support for the office and special events.
The Rochester Philharmonic today has more than 4,300 individual and corporate members. The RPO is governed by a 27-member Board of Directors and has an annual operating budget of about $10.5 million. The orchestra has a core of 59 full-time musicians; the administrative staff includes 25 full-time employees. Ward Stare was appointed Music Director of the RPO in 2014. Jeff Tyzik has served as Principal Pops Conductor since 1994.
Ralph Craviso, who created and has successfully led the Orchestra’s financial recovery plan, will step down as President and CEO on August 31, 2017. Curt Long has been named President and CEO; the Board of Directors anticipates a seamless transition with the next President and CEO taking office on September 1st.
With a population of 211,000, Rochester is the third largest city in the state of New York. Its metropolitan area population across western New York is more than one million. Once known for its flour mills and then as a manufacturing hub, Rochester today is an international center for medical and technological development as well as higher education. The University of Rochester is home to the Eastman School of Music.
In recent years, Rochester has been cited as the most livable city (Places Rated Almanac), the third best place to raise a family (Forbes), and the fifth best city for families (Kiplinger’s), citing excellent public schools and low cost of living.
The next Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the Rochester Philharmonic will join the Orchestra as it anticipates the celebration of its centennial in a community that places high value on the arts, on music, and on its symphony orchestra. S/he will join the senior executive team of an Orchestra that is experiencing the forward momentum of a successful financial turnaround. S/he will join an organization that has gained strong community support and restored donor confidence in the ability of the RPO to execute on a plan that is producing a balanced budget for the current year and forecasts positive results for the next four years.
The Vice President of Marketing and Communications plans, implements, and evaluates marketing, sales, and communications programs that meet or exceed goals for attendance, subscribers, and earned revenue, while also promoting the RPO’s brand. S/he formulates short and long-term marketing and communications strategies, develops effective advertising and promotion campaigns, analyzes sales results, conducts market research, and utilizes tactics designed to maximize revenue.
The Vice President of Marketing and Communications will forge an effective partnership between marketing and the development and artistic departments to build patron loyalty and ensure a patron relationship system that enhances participation, appreciation, and revenue.
The Vice President is responsible for developing, justifying, implementing, and monitoring sales and expense budgets; meeting overarching organizational earned revenue objectives; establishing strategy for all marketing initiatives; and managing execution of best practices.
The Vice President of Marketing and Communications ensures that the Rochester Philharmonic brand is fully developed in a way that raises the profile of the Orchestra locally as well as nationally and internationally. S/he cultivates relationships with the media, and with the RPO publicist, s/he develops and manages a public relations strategy to increase awareness locally and state-wide.
The Vice President of Marketing and Communications reports to the Chief Operating Officer. With the COO and the Vice President of Development, s/he is a key staff leader in realizing the strategic objectives of the Rochester Philharmonic, in building on the momentum created by the financial recovery plan, and in ensuring the Orchestra’s long-term sustainability. S/he manages a professional team that includes the Marketing Manager, Communications Manager and Marketing Assistant, Director of Patron Services, and two positions on retainer: publicist and graphic designer.
The Director of Marketing and Communications acts as liaison between the RPO and communication teams from the Eastman School of Music, Rochester Ballet, government agencies, and other community organizations.
The successful candidate will be a highly strategic and seasoned professional with senior-level marketing experience and a track record for achieving and exceeding goals for earned income. S/he will be an effective manager of staff and projects. S/he will be a strategic thinker with superb planning, budgeting, analytic, and organizational, and communication skills.
The successful candidate will combine a broad knowledge of music, artists and repertoire with a passion for expanding audiences for orchestra and the demonstrated ability to attract and retain subscribers.
The successful candidate will be skilled in working effectively with designers, graphic artists, web-site technicians, writers, and other creative talent in order to achieve the highest standards in all marketing materials. S/he will be experienced in conducting, analyzing, and utilizing market research. S/he will be knowledgeable about direct mail, telemarketing, and e-marketing, and will be comfortable employing new media and Internet technology for advertising, sales, and promotions.
The successful candidate will have strong experience in developing opportunities for promotional partnerships and collaborations with sponsors and various community organizations and media.
The successful candidate will remain current about research and trends in marketing, sales, and audience development in orchestras and the performing arts. S/he will be aware of best practices in the field and informed about creative, innovative ways that have proven successful in attracting and engaging audiences for orchestras.
The successful candidate will be a team player with strong interpersonal skills. S/he will able to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities with grace, skill, and good humor. S/he will be an experienced and effective supervisor with the ability to inspire staff to achieve their goals for sales, customer service, and community engagement.
